Description
OCR12VMS is dimensionally stable, high carbon and high chromium steel. Very suitable for air hardening. Very good toughness.
Applications
High-duty cutting tools (dies and punches), blanking and punching tools, woodworking tools, shear blades for cutting light metals, deep drawing and cold extrusion, pressing tools, small moulds for the plastics.

Soft Annealing
Heat to 800-850oC, cool slowly in furnace. This will produce a maximum Brinell hardness of 250.
Stress Relieving
Stress relieving to remove machining stresses should be carried out by heating to 650-700oC, holding for 1-2 hours at heat, followed by air cooling. This operation is performed to reduce distortion during heat treatment.
Hardening
Harden from a temperature of 1020-1040oC followed by air quenching or warm bath quenching 500-550oC. Hardness after quenching is 63-65 HRC.

Tempering temperature: See the diagram bellow.
