Description
This is one of the special purpose, low alloy steel/" target="_blank" class="keylink">tool steel grades, similar to the W group of low alloy steel/" target="_blank" class="keylink">tool steels. L6 contains nickel, chromium and molybdenum for a good combination of toughness and hardenability.
Applications
Typically used in machine tool applications such as bearings, springs, rollers or chuck parts, plastic moulds, molds for forging, stamps, die holders and piercers.

Soft Annealing
Heat to 670-700oC, cool slowlyin furnace. This will produce a maximum Brinell hardness of 250.
Stress Relieving
Stress relieving to remove machining stresses should be carried out by heating to approx. 650oC, holding for 1-2 hours at heat, followed by air cooling. This operation is performed to reduce distortion during heat treatment.
Hardening
Harden from a temperature of 830-870oC followed by oil quenching. Hardness after quenching is 57-61 HRC.
Tempering
Tempering temperature: 400-700oC.

Forging
Hot forming temperature: 1050-850oC.
Machinability
Machinability of L6 is very good. It rates 90% of the machinability of the W group water hardening low steel/" target="_blank" class="keylink">alloy steels rated 100% as a baseline.
Dimensional stability: Steel has good safe-hardening and non-hardening properties characteristics of oil-hardening steels. When properly oil quenched, expansion of 0.0381 mm/mm (0.0015 in/in) is expected.
Cryogenic treatments: Refrigeration treatments may improve long-term dimensional stability by transforming retained austenite. Refrigeration treatments should be performed after at least one temper, to minimize risk of cracking, and should always be followed by a temper.
Corrosion Resistance
This is basically a steel alloy and is not corrosion resistant. Protect from rusting.
Welding
This alloy is weldable. Consult the supplier for proper procedures.
